JHS First Year Lessons

Please read the basic methods if you are curious about my general strategy and approach.

ALT Self-Introduction This is a self-introduction lesson that focuses on letting the students communicate with the ALT. Avoid using an entire class to give a lecture on your home country and instead engage your students to help you determine their English language ability. This will let the JTE realize you can actually teach and think for yourself. It can help you escape being a mindless voice box. The lesson plan and worksheet are at the very end of the post.

King Game Activity This is a snakes-and-ladder’esq game that can be used for a variety of different grammar points. You can fill it in with your own questions on the provided template or play just how I made it originally. Play with the whole class divided into groups or let the students play in groups of 4.

Where is the ~ ? It’s on/under/by/behind the ~.  This is a game to practice asking the location of objects and then giving the answer with the location. It uses teamwork and memory skills to complete. It’s a lot of fun even for students who are weak at English. You will get 100% classroom participation with this lesson.

Who is that ~ ? This activity lets the students ask specific questions, listen to the answer, and then tell the teacher what they learned.

I can ~ . This lesson introduces and practices the use of can with a snakes and ladders style game.

Can you ~ ? This lesson follows up I can ~. lesson using the same game sheet, slightly modified, new worksheet, and slightly different rules.

What are you doing? This lesson becomes the basic template that I use for most of JHS. Input (read question), Output (ask question), Analyze (share with group), Output (tell 3rd party).
